Games BAFTAs

Posted in Reviews, UK at 11:13 am by yuka

On E4 last night (11pm), they showed a BAFTA for games. “Games are increasingly becoming mainstream” and hence, they felt that doing such award ceremonies (sponsored by PCWorld) was positive. Yeah, right. We watched it, and no justice to games was done whatsoever.

How many times did we hear “Games are for geeks” kind of commentary! Surely the successes of Nintendogs, Animal Crossing and many MMORPGs got so many girls interested in gaming itself? But no, none of these ever got even a mention. Oh hang on… the only online game to get a mention and an award for Best Online category was Dungeons & Dragons… good, but hardly the best, according to gamers. And would you vote Ghost Recon as the Best Game?

No, this whole “we are open to gaming and gamers” farce was sheer perpetration of aggressive marketing and nothing more. How very disappointing that games do not yet get the recognition they deserve in this country.

Out with Panda/Diablo, In with Netherwhelp

Posted in News, Online gaming, UK at 5:20 pm by yuka

WoW: Burning Crusade is the expansion pack to the extremely addictive game, as you all (should) know. Both Play.com and Amazon UK has it on pre-order for £17.99 (incl. p&p). No mention however of the Collector’s Edition as of yet on either sites. Netherwhelp, eh? I’m almost tempted seeing I missed out on the wonderfully cuddly panda cub. But then again, it does depend on the price…

No news is just plain boring

Posted in Japanese, News at 11:30 am by yuka

Absolutely fuck all for game news of interest lately, it’s almost disheartening. I’m not the type to consider ‘hype’ as game news, and that’s all there is at the moment it seems.

For example, ‘hype’ (+ marketing) of two Bandai/Namco games: Tales of the Tempest and Tales of Destiny. Former is out 26th this month priced approx. £25.20 for the DS, while the latter’s out 22nd November for approx. £35.70 for the PS2. Looks like the same ol’ RPG-types to me, with not much of an advantage over other such games, and yet, games sites in Japan are going nuts over it. That’s just plain ‘hype’, don’t you think?

The only ‘hype’ I’ll listen to would be the online poll that has its readers polling on which console they’ll buy: PS3 comes out at 40% (after the news that the prices may come down), Wii at 39% and Xbox360 at a meagre 6%.

Let’s just hope this ‘no news’ drought will soon end. Meanwhile, I’ll get back to playing all those PC games I’ve got lying around, and get a better high score on Yoshi’s Egg (GB game I recently purchased from an independent game store in Japan).
